Let’s start off by commending the Smokehouse for using the word ‘wingery’ in their name. A term Wikipedia, dictionary.com, and all my spellcheckers have not been able to process as of yet. From the outside, the Smokehouse in Boca doesn’t look like much, but the atmosphere inside is pleasantly surprising. The interior is clean and modern with bold reds and unfinished metal, but definitely keeping that original BBQ style with their wood facades, chalkboard, and checkered baskets. We went on a Wednesday and were greeted with $1 draughts (bonus points it wasn’t just Bud, Coors, and Miller). Their menu is quite robust with your standard BBQ fare from brisket and ribs, to pulled pork and chicken. Additionally, they offer several tasty sounding sandwiches and burgers. Of course, there was also the wing menu, consisting of 11 different flavors. We ordered a couple flavors of wings and a BBQ combo platter:
- Sweet & Tangy wings
- Medium wings
- Smokehouse Pit #7 (Pick Two): Pulled Pork, Baby Back Ribs, Cornbread, Baked Beans, Red Bliss – Caramelized Onion Smashed (Potatoes)
- Our friends had a platter of Brisket, Pork, Ribs, Cornbread, Baked Beans and Mac & Cheese
The wings were really quite good, much better than most, and certainly worth going back for. They were fried to have a great crisp on them. The sauces were very good; I’d probably try something new next time, but highly recommend the Sweet & Tangy. Another high point was the sides. Usually I like a sweet, honey cornbread, but the Smokehouse’s is quite different. It was a much heartier, veggie style cornbread and to my surprise, I really liked it. The smashed potatoes were also superb, and will probably become my standard side dish on my return. Now we come to the BBQ. It came out on a huge wood plate, screaming awesomeness! The real issue for the BBQ was that it wasn’t really that hot. I would say the meat and it’s flavors were better than most restaurants, but just not quite as good as most BBQ restaurants. I will surely go back for the wings and to give the BBQ another go. Worth checking out for yourself. The food, atmosphere, and pricing were all above average. The wings will have you going back for more!
